Santa Cruz Derby Girls (#42, seed #1) drew first blood against Sac City Rollers (#45, seed #2) in the Championship game of D2 Kalamazoo tournament, grabbing a quick 5 points. The points went back and forth in the opening minutes of the California battle royale, however, with Sac City edging out Santa Cruz in the first five minutes. Back-and-forth power jams, first with Sac City with the advantage and then Santa Cruz in the following jam, set an early precedent in the game; the two teams fought tirelessly for the opportunity to play the Champions of Des Moines in the first D2 tournament of 2013, the Jet City Rollergirls. Ten minutes into the first period saw Santa Cruz ahead by a slim 25 points, 53-28.

Ten minutes into the game to determine third and fourth place, tournament hosts Killamazoo Derby Darlins (#46, seed #3) asserted their dominance over NEO Roller Derby (#51, seed #5), quickly jumping the point spread to 40+ points. However, Killamazoo faced some difficulty when their blockers filled the penalty box, and jammer Aly-Kate Contusions spent two back-to-back minutes in the penalty box. NEO used the momentum shift to grab 30 points and bring the point spread within reach, at 82-63.

In the Empire state showdown for ninth place, the Suburbia Roller Derby (seed 10, ranked 65) from Westchester, New York, and the Queen City Roller Girls (seed 6, ranked 54) from Buffalo, New York, tore up the early morning track. The teams last met in March of 2012 in a nail-biter of a game when Queen City came out with the win, but only by 6 points. This game was equally as nerve-wracking.
Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.
