The first game in the WFTDA D2 Playoffs in Kalamazoo consolation bracket was a clear indication that the excitement had not ended. Carolina Roller Girls (seed 4, ranked 50), from Raleigh, North Carolina, and Suburbia Roller Derby (seed 10, ranked 65) from Westchester, New York, brought a nail-biting game to the early morning.

Paper Valley Roller Girls (seed 7, ranked 55), after their win over Suburbia Roller Derby, earned a spot in the bout against 2nd seeded Sac City Rollers (ranked 45) out of Sacramento, California. This tournament was the first for the team from Appleton, Wisconsin, and it showed from the first jam all the way through the bout. They struggled and seemed distracted at times.

The Queen City Roller Girls (6 seed, ranked 54) from Buffalo, New York, took on the hometown Killamazoo Derby Darlins’ (3 seed, ranked 46) in front of a raucous crowd in the final game of the first day of D2 Playoff play.

Derby is always full of surprises, but for some reason, we’re still always amazed when we get one. The game against the 8 seed Tri-City Roller Girls (ranked 60) who had advanced to take on the 1st seed Santa Cruz Derby Girls (ranked 42) out of Santa Cruz, California, took almost every person in the area the fans by surprise.

NEO Roller Derby (5 seed, ranked 51) out of Akron, Ohio, and the Carolina Roller Girls (4 seed, ranked 50) from Raleigh, North Carolina, played an exciting, tight game filled with power jams and lead changes that required nerves of steel for both the players and the fans.
