The Dirty South Derby Girls of the Atlanta Rollergirls (2 seed, ranked 7) have shown the derby-verse that they’re a force to be reckoned with, especially with their rise during the 2012 tournament season. The team made their first trip to WFTDA Championships one year ago, securing their spot after a close loss to Texas Rollergirls. After coming off a strong showing at the end of last season, Atlanta has continued to dominate, going 8-1 in regular season play, getting their only loss from Gotham Girls Roller Derby in late June.

The last game of the day, between #3 Rat City Rollergirls and #6 [Boston Derby Dames](Rat City Rollergirls boston) began as a highly defensive slog with both teams struggling to put many points on the board. Rat City held a slim lead for more than 10 minutes, as both teams largely kept all their skaters on the track. That changed, however, when Rat City’s jammer picked up a two-minute penalty. Boston rode the advantage to a 39-19 lead over Rat City. However, Boston kept losing blockers to penalties, and Rat City quickly started to close the gap again, to 40-30 Boston.

The B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls (1 Seed) set the tone early on in their match against the scrappy team from Melbourne, Australia, Victorian Roller Derby League (8 Seed), coming out with an 11-0 first jam. While VRDL’s defense made the Bay Area jammers fight hard for their points, in the end the ladies from San Francisco, California, validated their seeding and took home a 311-127 win.

Two tried-and-true tournament teams gave the crowd some thrills during the third game of WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in Salem. The Detroit Derby Girls All Stars (4 Seed) and the Charm City Roller Girls All Stars (5 Seed) have a long history, first bouting-it-out in 2007 at the East Coast Derby Extravaganza. Their most recent game was in 2011, and was a barn-burner for sure, with Charm City coming out on top by only two points. In the end, today’s game was no less exciting as the one from two years ago.

With the farthest distance to travel of any of the participating teams, the Victorian Roller Derby League (8 Seed, #31) of Melbourne, Australia, used their might to ensure a win and continued play in the winner’s bracket when they set skates on the track. Their opponents, The Chicago Outfit’s (9 seed, #36) Syndicate, came off of a season with ups and downs, and narrow wins to play the international team. Despite high penalties and power jams for each team, Victoria managed to take a solid win over the Syndicate, 304-115.
