With both teams playing for the opportunity to advance further in the tournament than they were seeded, Sacred City Derby Girls (7 seed, rank 28), of Sacramento, California, lined up against the ladies from Melbourne, Australia, the Victorian Roller Derby League (8 seed, rank 31) in Game 11 of the Salem Playoffs.

Even though Atlanta Rollergirls (2 seed, rank 7) scored first in their game against Rat City Rollergirls (3) (W12), Rat City used a power jam to shift momentum in their favor, scoring 23 points in the second and third jams. The points continued back and forth throughout the game, each team capitalizing on power jams and scoring opportunities, but Atlanta came out ahead, securing a trip to WFTDA Championships, after a narrow victory over Rat City, 220-186.

The last time B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls (1) (W4) played Detroit Derby Girls (4) (W15) was in 2011 in The Golden Bowl tournament. BAD beat Detroit. Roller derby has changed a lot since 2011, but the outcome of today’s game was a repeat of the BAD Girls’ win two years ago. Asserting their higher seeding from the first whistle to the last, B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls defeated Detroit 343-59.

The Boston Derby Dames (6 seed, rank 23) and The Chicago Outfit (9 seed rank 36) had never played against each other until Game 8 at the Salem Playoffs. The game highlighted the difference between the sixth and ninth teams at the tournament, as Boston skated away with the win, 378-184.

Both teams coming off losses added the fuel that made the first game of Day 2 at WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Salem explosive. Sacred City Derby Girls (7 seed, rank 28) suffered the upset loss to 10 seed Toronto Roller Derby during Game 2, while Charm City Roller Girls (5 seed, rank 20) fell to longtime rival Detroit. At the final whistle, however, Sacred City pulled an upset of their own, defeating Charm City Roller Girls 213-186.
