The eighth-seeded Jacksonville RollerGirls jumped out to an early 20-0 lead against #6 seed No Coast Derby Girls, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and held onto the lead the entire game. The team from Jacksonville, Florida – fresh off a narrow loss in Game 1 Friday – seemed to have shaken the problems that landed their jammers in the penalty box the day before. The Jacksonville jammers spent only 6 minutes in the penalty box, with most of those penalties coming late in the game, compared to No Coast jammers’ 9 minutes in the penalty box. Jacksonville defeated the Nebraska team, 213-125.
No Coast jammer Megan Harrington committed a penalty in the first jam, leaving Jacksonville jammer Jamsterella unopposed, for an easy 20 points.
Jacksonville jammers Crash Register, Miss Jax’em and Jamsterella earned lead jammer status for the team a total of 27 times – and Jamsterella made her first and second trips to the penalty box with less than two minutes left to play in the game. But in the first 10 minutes of play, No Coast blockers had gone to the box six times, and Harrington had sat twice, putting the team in early penalty trouble.
Team captain Meow Mix and Kat Von Scratchereyezout – the only two Jacksonville blockers on the track in jam 18 – managed to contain the No Coast jammer, allowing Miss Jax’em to earn lead jammer status. Even when No Coast earned lead, the team was rarely able to capitalize on that advantage, thanks to Jacksonville’s teamwork.
The first half ended with Jacksonville leading 109-54. And the second half began with Harrington going to the penalty box for a low block, along with team captain Andrea Tarnick, who got called for a direction of gameplay penalty.
In the eighth jam, Harrington tried to block opposing jammer Miss Jax’em off the jammer line and got a direction of gameplay penalty, going to the box for the fourth time with 21 minutes still left to play. But Miss Jax’em quickly picked up her first penalty of the game – a track cut – and went to the box. Harrington came back and got a track-cut penalty in the first two-minute jam of the game, which ended with a score of 155-65, in favor of Jacksonville.
Harrington and Jax’em reenacted a similar scene in Jam 15, with Harrington going to the box first on a track cut, and Jackson joining her after getting called for a back block. Harrington came back to the track first, but No Coast didn’t seem to notice Miss Jax’em, as she came back and sneaked through the pack to score.
