Returning to postseason play for the eighth consecutive year, the Texas Rollergirls (#6, seed #2), of Austin, Texas, took on the Terminal City Rollergirls (#38, seed #10), of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Terminal City – in its first appearance in post-season tournament play – put up a good fight against Texas, the team that earned the first WFTDA Championship title in 2006. But Texas came away with a 377-125 win.
Terminal City earned lead jammer in the first jam, but by the end of jam 3, Texas was up 15-3. Just as they did in the earlier game against #7 seed Tampa, Terminal City attempted several star passes – not all of them successful. In jam 4, Terminal City pivot Buffy Sainte Fury nearly skated out of the engagement zone, as she tried to put on the jammer star, but she stopped just in time when she heard her coach yelling from the sidelines.
Terminal City’s attempts to bust up the Texas walls were largely ineffective, as Texas blockers barely budged, or simply rotated positions to maintain their walls.
Texas jammers Olivia Shootin’ John, Bloody Mary and Hauss the Boss earned lead jammer status repeatedly, and even when Terminal City jammers got lead, they were unable to score many points against Texas defenders.
Despite Texas’ crushing defense and nimble jamming, Terminal City continued to fight like a team that was seeded much higher than #10, occasionally executing some great plays against the Texecutioners – like when jammer Evada Peron knocked Olivia Shootin’ John out of bounds and reversed on the track just enough to force a track cut.
The first half ended with Texas leading 153-68.
In the second half, Terminal City jammer Kim Janna – after getting hammered repeatedly by Texas blockers – passed the jammer star to Scarlet Bloodbath. Then she exacted revenge by knocking Olivia Shootin’ John out of bounds and running back nearly half a lap. But the Texas jammer still managed to outscore Terminal City, and the jam ended with the score at 171-68, in favor of Texas.
Several times, Terminal City’s jammers nearly exited the front of the pack, when Texas blockers recycled to the front and caught them again. Kim Janna was able to sneak through on the inside once with a few well-timed hops, but that was the exception in a game dominated by Texas defense.
Terminal City scored 10 points on power jam about midway through the second half, but Texas scored 12 points in the same jam. Texas continued to increase its lead, as Terminal City blockers kept going to the penalty box.
(2) Texas Rollergirls 377
(10) Terminal City Roller Girls 125
Texas will face #3 seed Naptown Roller Girls in the 4 p.m. game Saturday. Terminal City will play again Saturday in the consolation bracket.
Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.
