Angel City Derby Girls (#5, seed #1), of Los Angeles, California, defeated Naptown Roller Girls (#13, seed #3), of Indianapolis, Indiana, 222-130, earning third place in 2013 WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in Richmond, and a spot at the Championships, Nov. 8-10, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This will be Angel City’s first trip to the Championships.
Naptown took an early 13-0 lead, but the Indianapolis jammers spent six minutes in the penalty box, giving Angel City ample opportunity to score. Angel City had three power jams in the first half.
Naptown was able to execute some offensive plays against Angel City, but Angel City’s blockers quickly regrouped and absorbed Naptown’s jammers.
Maiden American scored 32 of Naptown’s 63 first-half points, earning lead jammer status in 3-out-of-6 turns jamming. Chica Go Lightning earned lead jammer status four times in her six turns as jammer, racking up 67 points in the first half for Angel City.
Asian Sinsation knocked out jammer Ghetto Fabu-lez at one point and attempted to run backwards, but the L.A. blockers blocked her path and prevented what could have been a setback for Angel City.
In the rare instances when Naptown was jamming unopposed, the team was unable to parlay that advantage into significant points, accumulating only a handful of points. Often, the Naptown jammer ended up going to the box in the same jam. Angel City earned lead jammer status in 60 percent of first-half jams and 65 percent of second-half jams, so Naptown was rarely in control of when the jam ended.
A back block call on Mickispeedia allowed Maiden America to put nine more points on the board before the half ended, 129-63, in favor of Angel City.
In the second half, Naptown scored a 1-0 jam, with the next jam ending 0-0, when G-Rocket was rapidly approaching the pack and Angel City jammer Cris Dobbins called off the jam to prevent her from scoring. Naptown jammer Pushy Cat put 17 points on the board for Naptown when Dobbins went to the penalty box for an out-of-play block. But that was the end of big-point runs for the Indianapolis team.
Cereal Killer and Ima Hurchu were able to contain Dobbins in one jam, with G-Rocket earning lead jammer, but a forearm call on Blue Messiah in the next jam gave Angel City the opportunity to score 14 unanswered points. Angel City blockers Soledad, Krissy Krash, Rachel Rotten, and Jane Wilkins were nearly unstoppable together. Ima Hurchu, R.I.P.tide, and Asian Sinsation charged the L.A. pack to break it up for jammer G-Rocket, but the Angel City blockers were able to regroup in seconds.
Krissy Krash skated in 15 jams for Angel City with no penalties, and teammate Duchess Von Damn skated in 20 jams with no penalties. Naptown totaled 31 penalties for the game to Angel City’s 25.
