The third bout of the day brought the weekend’s first upset, as the #3 West seed, B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls, was able to overcome the tough challenge of the Philly Roller Girls (East #2).
If there’s one word to describe this bout, it’s speed. Both teams brought the ferocity right off the whistle, and the pack attempted to outrun opposing jammers several times.
Although Philly got lead jammer status the first few jams, the Bay Area defense held them back, and jammers Nock Nock and Lulu Lockjaw ran up the score. Philly took an early time out to regroup from the initial shock of Bay Area’s quick scoring. Bay Area held Philly at 9 points for several jams, but a power jam by Teflon Donna hinted at a resurgence. Unfortunately for Philly, Bay Area’s blocking, led by Demanda Riot and belle RIGHT hooks shut down their jammers.
Philly started getting in penalty trouble, and at one point only had 1 blocker on the track. As a testament to Philly jammer V-Diva’s athleticism, she was able to still get lead jammer and score a few points in that situation. The end of the first period brought a rally for Philly, leaving the score 91 Bay Area, 59 Philly.
The second half found Philly looking hungry and ready to make their move, bringing Mo Pain in the jammer rotation. Philly got within 10 points of Bay Area but, due to Bay Area’s tenacious blocking and powerhouse jammers, never regained the lead.
In the final 10 minutes of the game, Bay Area continued to nickel and dime their way into a sizeable lead. The final score was 169 for Bay Area, and 119 for Philly. Bay Area goes on to play the Texas Rollergirls Saturday at 10 am.
