Three Quarters of WFTDA D1 Championships Teams Set

Now that the first three rounds of WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs are complete, derby fans know nine of the 12 Division 1 teams advancing to WFTDA Championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Nov. 8-10.

This past weekend in Asheville, North Carolina, Gotham Girls Roller Derby, of New York, New York; Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, of Denver, Colorado; and the Windy City Rollers of Chicago, Illinois, earned their spots in Championships. Gotham Girls Roller Derby is the reigning WFTDA Champion, having won the Hydra trophy in 2012, 2011 and 2008. Read game recaps and view photos from Asheville in our Playoffs blog.

During the D1 Playoffs in Richmond, Virginia, Sept. 13-15, the Texas Rollergirls, of Austin, Texas; Philly Roller Girls, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Angel City Derby Girls of Los Angeles, California, advanced to Championships. During the first weekend of WFTDA Playoffs, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Sept. 6-8, the Denver Roller Dolls, of Denver, Colorado; Ohio Rollergirls, of Columbus, Ohio; and London Rollergirls, of London, UK, qualified for Championships.This is the first trip to Championships for both Ohio and London, and London is the first non-U.S. team in WFTDA history to qualify for Championships. The final three seeds for the 2013 WFTDA Division 1 Championships will be determined during the D1 Playoffs in Salem, Oregon, this weekend. If you're not able to attend in person, you can watch 10 of WFTDA's top teams battle for their shot at the Hydra via WFTDA.tv!

The WFTDA Championships weekend will also include the first ever Division 2 Championship game and Third Place game. The Jet City Rollergirls of Everett, Washington, and Santa Cruz Derby Girls of Santa Cruz, California, won their respective D2 Playoffs in August and will compete for the D2 Championship title. The Blue Ridge Rollergirls of Asheville, North Carolina, and Sac City Rollers, of Sacramento, California, took second place in the two D2 Playoffs and will compete in the Third Place game.
