WFTDA runs on the power of its member leagues. Each league brings something different and special to the organization. Here we will introduce you to a different league every month, and tell you a little more about their accomplishments and contributions to the organization and the sport of women's flat track roller derby.

The Tampa Bay Derby Darlins are hosting the Franky Panky WFTDA recognized tournament (named in honor of their beloved mascot, Frank T. Flamingo) April 10-11, 2010. In 2008 and 2009, TBDD hosted the Sunshine Skate Florida State Roller Derby Championship during the Florida State Fair. The Tampa Tantrums are the two-time defending state champions, and they will try for a 3rd title in December. Take a moment to learn more about our friends from Florida, the TBDD.

The Denver Roller Dolls (DRD) made waves in 2009 by adopting and perfecting a controversial strategy of controlling pack speed that helped take them all the way to the 2009 WFTDA National Tournament. Their unique approach of alternating between extreme slow play and near sprinting landed them third place and shocked the roller derby community. DRD also recently cemented a relationship with AEG Live/Rocky Mountains and Kroenke Sports Enterprises, leaders in the sports and entertainment marketing field, which some see as a big step toward legitimizing the sport of flat track roller derby. WFTDA's 2009 National Champions, Oly Rollers, came out of nowhere to sweep the Western Regional Tournament, and later claim the Hydra Trophy at the Declaration of Derby National Tournament. The Oly Rollers are relatively new to WFTDA, having joined in April of 2008, and were not even ranked at the beginning of 2009. Though it was not much of a surprise to anyone who faced the team (or just watched them play) during the regular season, the flat track roller derby world was stunned when Oly knocked out WFTDA 2008 champs, Gotham Girls Roller Derby, early in the national tournament, and later defeated 2006 champs, Texas Rollergirls, to take home the Hydra. WFTDA is excited about the level of competition this league has brought to the organization, and can't wait to see what else they have in store. The Philly Rollergirls made a big splash this year, winning the WFTDA Eastern Regional tournament, and breaking the two-year, 18-game winning streak held by reigning 2008 National Champion, Gotham Girls Roller Derby. They also graciously hosted the 2009 WFTDA national tournament, "Declaration of Derby," in November. While they were ultimately unable to take home the Hydra Trophy, Philly was definitely a team to watch in '09. We'd like to take a moment to tell you a little more about this great league.
