Gotham Girls Roller Derby squeaked past the Rose City Rollers to win their fourth straight championship in a down-to-the-wire game marked by shutdown defense and unreal jammer maneuvering by both teams, not to mention eight lead changes and two ties. Both teams found themselves pushed to the brink and almost perfectly evenly matched, forced to draw deep on their endurance, rules mastery and endless hours of practice to challenge each other all the way to the final jam.

The #3 and #6 teams in the WFTDA met for the first time today in the 3rd place game at International 2014 WFTDA Championships. The B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls defended their previous 3rd place finish as they defeated the London Rollergirls in a game full of slow, solid walls and well-planned offensive blocks.

The Detroit Derby Girls swept to a 100-plus-point win over the Rideau Valley Roller Girls in the first-ever WFTDA Division 2 Championship game to feature an international team. The stars of the game were double-threat jammer-blockers Cookie Rumble and Racer McChaseHer for Detroit and Soul Rekker and Shania Pain for Rideau, as capable of dancing delicately through tiny gaps in the pack as they were laying devastating hits on opposing jammers in a game dominated by heavy defense, but punctuated with brief offensive punches. Detroit’s win came on the heels of a nail-biting D2 third-place game, in which the Berlin Bombshells overtook the Fabulous Sin City Roller Girls for a 1-point win in the first finals game at a WFTDA championship tournament to feature an international team.

The final day of international 2014 WFTDA Championships started with an exciting Division 2 Third Place game between Berlin, Germany’s Bear City Roller Derby (Kitchener-Waterloo #2, #45) and Las Vegas, Nevada’s Fabulous Sin City Rollergirls (Duluth #2, #50). The game was not decided until the very last jam, and is the second (out of only three) D2 games at Championships to be decided by one point.

In a rematch of one of the most highly anticipated games of the year, the Gotham Girls Roller Derby pushed to a comfortable, but by no means easy, 280-94 win over the London Rollergirls. Although Gotham won by nearly two hundred points, London nearly doubled its score from when the two teams met in July in an instant-sellout bout just four months ago.
Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.
