Portland, Oregon’s Rose City Rollers (Charleston Seed #1, #2) was the first team to advance to the final Championship game after they solidly defeated San Francisco, California’s Bay Area Derby Girls (Salt Lake City Seed #1, #3). These two teams are fairly familiar with each other and had a 5-5 record with Bay Area winning their two most recent games with differentials under 30 points. Rose City skater Sarah Gaither said they came into the game “focusing on playing our game, controlling what we can control.”

In the first WFTDA Championship tournament game to feature two non-U.S. teams, the London Rollergirls forced their way to a 173-142 win over the Victorian Roller Derby League thanks to devastating recycling and well-timed offense. VRDL hoped to carry their momentum from yesterday’s game against the Minnesota Rollergirls for their second-ever win at a WFTDA championship tournament, but London’s experience and calm bench proved insurmountable.

In a rematch of last year’s Championship final game, Gotham Girls Roller Derby (Sacramento Seed #1, #1) once again defeated the Texas Rollergirls (Evansville Seed #3, #5). Despite a strong effort by the Texas defense and offense, Gotham was able to continue their winning streak and make it back to the semifinals.

The Rose City Rollers raced to an early 61-1 lead over the Windy City Rollers within the first five minutes of their first game at the international 2014 WFTDA Championships and never looked back. Both teams, which had not met since back when minor penalties were relevant, played a heavily defensive game that left jammers for both teams exhausted from pushing against nearly unmovable walls.

Day two of the international 2014 WFTDA Championships started with another close and defense-heavy game that featured slow walls and well-timed offense. In their first game of the weekend, the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls (Salt Lake City Seed #1, #3) quickly took the lead and held it against Denver Roller Dolls (Sacramento Seed #2, #8). These two teams played each other twice this year with Bay Area winning by 108 in April and 142 in July. Denver improved on their previous games by coming within 39 points of Bay Area.
