Bout 12: Rat City Rollergirls vs Sacred City Derby Girls

September 22, 2012

Rat City Rollergirls (#6) defeats Sacred City City Derby Girls (#10) to reach 5th place bout

By Shelly Shankya

The upset team from Day 1 of Bay of Reckoning, the Sacred City Derby Girls (#10), showed up for a showdown with Rat City Rollergirls (#6) as the penultimate bout of Day 2. Both teams used strong wall defense for the bout's opening, making the jammers work tooth and nail for even the slightest edge. The walls and blocks were so tough, in fact, that Rat City's jammer Yoko Onoudi'nt took a fall that brought the medics to the track. She skated off the track on her own eight wheels, however, and reappeared near the half's conclusion.

Rat City and Sacred City's blockers spent power jams in a slow line-up on the outside lane as jammers powered through the tough defense. Rat City had the power jam advantage for the first half with three. Those, along with four-wall power from the team's blockers, made it possible for Rat City to come out on top for the half, 102-45.

"Our blockers accomplished a lot with teamwork," Sacred City blocker Slapjack said. "We felt really good about our play tonight. We played Rat City back in 2010, and it was a tough game. We had goals tonight, and it was a huge improvement for us from our game two years ago."

Halftime was longer than usual due to a sun glare delay on the track, and when the first whistle starting the half finally blew, outside pack refs showed up in shades to more easily decipher players and penalties.

As the sun set, so did Sacred's hopes of coming back, especially after Jalepeno Business's 30-point power jam. The crowd chanted "Captain Apex" after Rat City's jammer avoided a huge hit by jumping several feet to clear the track's apex. And, with her clean landing, Jalepeno helped punch the team's ticket to tomorrow's fifth place bout. The game ended with Sacred City's jammer in the box and a tough Sacred wall, though Rat's jammer Carmen Getsome was able to weave her way through.

Rat City advances to play Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (#5) at 2 pm PDT on Sunday for fifth place. Sacred City continues to play Angel City Derby Girls (#8) at noon on Sunday for a chance at seventh place.
