After playing the final game yesterday, Treasure Valley Roller Derby All Stars (Seed #4) of Boise, Idaho played against Brandywine Roller Girls' The Belligerents (Seed #10) of Downingtown, Pennsylvania to start the second day of 2015 International WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in Cleveland. This was Treasure Valley and Brandywine’s first time playing each other, though they were both at Division 2 Playoffs in Duluth last year. Ultimately Brandywine remained more consistent throughout the game and won, guaranteeing that they will finish in a higher spot than they started.
Brandywine started the first half strong and took an early 36-4 lead after Treasure Valley’s jammer Cruel La La! committed three penalties in jams four and five. In the fifth jam both teams had jammers in the box, but Treasure Valley’s Udaho scored 15 points over Lurz Lemon’s 10. The momentum shifted positively for Treasure Valley, as they received their first lead jammer status in the following jam and continued to catch up to Brandywine’s lead.
About halfway through the first half Brandywine’s jammers committed multiple penalties and Treasure Valley’s blockers worked hard to get their jammer points. With 12 minutes left in the half, Treasure Valley was only three points behind Brandywine with a score of 59-62. Soon Treasure Valley took the lead for one jam, but Brandywine’s Buenos D. A$$, Lurz Lemon, and Raggedy Aneurysm pushed through to keep their team in the lead until halftime with a score of 88-98.
Treasure Valley’s jammer Udaho started the second half in the penalty box, but was given an opportunity to score when Brandywine’s jammer cut the track on her initial pass. Like many other jams in this game both teams earned points while blockers and jammers took turns sitting in the penalty box. Scarlet Danger, a strong blocker for Treasure Valley, fouled out of the game early in the second half. Four of her teammates would follow by earning their seventh penalties at various points in the second half. Despite their penalty troubles, Treasure Valley was able to take the lead for the second time. With 20 minutes left in the game the score was 119-109.
In the following jam, the penalty box was full of blockers from both teams, but Brandywine’s Ballerinka was able to contain Treasure Valley’s jammer Ella Snofury. Buenos D. A$$ took back the lead for Brandywine with a 23-point jam, her largest of the game. The score was 134-144 with 15 minutes left in the game, and Brandywine continued to build a lead over the rest of the game. When both teams started jams with all of their blockers on the track they both set up solid three walls with one blocker bracing backwards in the front. Brandywine’s blockers were more successful at keeping their walls together when they lost blockers to the penalty box, and this allowed them to keep Treasure Valley limited to 69 total points in the second half. 118 points were added to Brandywine’s total to bring the final score to 157-216.
Treasure Valley committed a total of 58 penalties and 13 of those were on their jammers. Brandywine was not far behind on jammer penalties with 12, but kept their total penalty count slightly lower at 48. Demolition Barbie was Treasure Valley’s most successful jammer with 72 points and Buenos D. A$$ scored 82 points for Brandywine.
Brandywine continues towards the 5th place game when they play Oklahoma Victory Dolls later today at 4 PM Eastern. Treasure Valley will play their final game tomorrow at 10 AM for 9th place against Jet City or Columbia.
