Rose City Rollers Win 2015 International WFTDA Championships

November 9, 2015

The Rose City Rollers, of Portland, Oregon, defeated defending Champions, Gotham Girls Roller Derby, in the final game at the 2015 International WFTDA Championships to take home the Hydra trophy.

Gotham has won every WFTDA Championship since 2011 (as well as in 2008), and hasn't lost a WFTDA-sanctioned game since 2010, when they lost in the semifinal round at WFTDA Championships in Chicago. Rose City nearly took the title from Gotham in 2014, losing by just three points in the final jam of the Championship game. This year's rematch was a thrilling battle from start to finish, with Rose City taking the win 206-195.

Victorian Roller Derby League of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia defeated London Rollergirls to place third and become the first non-U.S. team to take home D1 Championship medals.

The Division 2 finals featured a rematch of the final game at Playoffs in Detroit, with Sacred City Derby Girls of Sacramento, California defeating Nashville Rollergirls to take home the gold. Demolition City Roller Derby of Evansville, Indiana came in third.

The tournament MVP was Scald Eagle of Rose City, who was also named MVP at Playoffs in Dallas.

In a historic step for WFTDA and women's flat track roller derby, the final day of Championships aired exclusively on ESPN3 in the United States. Viewers can watch a replay of the final four games on ESPN3 for 30 days following the event, and on wftda.tv after that. Archives of games from Day 1 and 2 will be available on wftda.tv later this week.

Congratulations to all of the participating teams for making it to Championships, and thanks to all the officials, announcers, sponsors, photographers, and volunteers who supported the tournament. Special thanks to tournament hosts Minnesota RollerGirls for welcoming the WFTDA community to their city!
