Gotham, Philly advance to championships

The final two games of the East Region Playoffs Sept. 26 will be a rematch of the 2009 tournament in the East Region, as the #2 seed Philly Roller Girls will try to repeat last year's 1-point win over Gotham Girls Roller Derby (#1) and the Boston Derby Dames (#3) will again battle the Charm City Roller Girls (#4) for the right to advance to the 2010 WFTDA Championship Tournament.

The second day of the "Derby in the 'Burbs" tournament Sept. 25 also marked the first rankings upset of the weekend in the East Region, when Carolina Rollergirls (#7) bested #6 seed Montreal Roller Derby in a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final jam. The final score was Carolina 127, Montreal 125.

Hurricane Heather, a jammer for Pittsburgh's Steel City Derby Demons, also broke a WFTDA tournament record that was set just two weeks eariler, during the North Central Region Playoffs. Heather scored 35 points in a single two-minute jam, breaking the 32-point record set by Detroit Derby Girls' Racer McChaser Sept. 11.
