September 24, 2010
Despite spirited challenges from lower-ranked teams, the higher seeds prevailed in every game of the first day of the WTDA East Region Playoffs Sept. 24. The day also marked the first appearance of a non-US team in the WFTDA playoffs -- Montreal Roller Derby, of Montreal, QC.
In Saturday's semifinals, #1 seed Gotham Girls Roller Derby, of New York, will face the #4 seed, the Charm City Roller Girls of Baltimore, MD, and #3 seed Boston Derby Dames will take on #2 seed Philly Roller Girls. All four teams still have a shot at making it to the 2010 WFTDA Championship Tournament in November, but only three will ultimately advance to the Championship.
Providence Roller Derby and the Carolina Rollergirls both experienced a win and a loss Friday. Providence held off the Dutchland Rollers, of Lancaster, PA, before losing to Gotham later in the day. Carolina advanced to play Philly but lost, after Carolina had won their first game of the day against the DC Rollergirls.
All teams will continue play through the remainder of the weekend, with non-advancing teams playing for rankings in the "consolation" rounds.
