With dominant performances all weekend, the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls of San Francisco, California, USA won the international 2014 WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in Salt Lake City, Utah, held Sept. 26-28. Bay Area came out on top of a field of 10 of the world’s top-ranked teams in women’s roller derby and will advance to the international 2014 WFTDA Championships in Nashvile Oct. 31-Nov. 2 with a first round bye.
Joining Bay Area in Nashville will be the Angel City Derby Girls of Los Angeles, California, USA, who placed second in Salt Lake City, and the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls of Denver, Colorado, who placed third.
Bay Area’s Bricktator was named tournament MVP.
The weekend saw plenty of edge-of-your seat action as game after game went down to the last jam, including the 9th Place game that ended in an overtime jam. Host league Wasatch Roller Derby, who was also competing in the tournament, had their fans going wild with their wins and close losses.
The tournament also brought the first ever all-Canadian team matchup in a WFTDA Playoffs, in a Saturday morning game between Montreal Roller Derby and Tri-City Roller Derby.
In the first two rounds of WFTDA D1 Playoffs, Gotham Girls Roller Derby, of New York, New York, USA; Denver Roller Dolls, of Denver, Colorado, USA; Minnesota RollerGirls, of St. Paul, Minnesota, USA; London Rollergirls of London, United Kingdom; Windy City Rollers, of Chicago, Illinois, USA; and Texas Rollergirls, of Austin, Texas, USA all punched their tickets to Nashville.
