The final game of 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison determined not only the color of the teams’ medals, but also who would have a first-round bye at November’s 2016 International WFTDA Championships. This benefit allows the First Place team from Madison to watch the competition on the Friday of Championships before having to play them on Saturday.

Arch Rival Roller Girls of St. Louis, MO, USA (seed #2) faced Tampa Roller Derby of Tampa, FL, USA (seed #4) at the 2016 International WFTDA Playoffs Madison to see who would take Third Place and claim a trip to November’s 2016 International WFTDA Championships.

The Fifth Place game at 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison was the only one featuring teams playing as they were seeded coming into the tournament. Team United Roller Derby of Urbandale, IA, USA (seed #5) was looking to maintain their seeding against Helsinki Roller Derby of Helsinki, Finland (seed #6). They did maintain their seeding with dominant pack play, controlling most of the game and winning, 206-155.

The Windy City Rollers of Chicago, IL, USA (seed #8) and the Mad Rollin’ Dolls of Madison, WI, USA (seed #10) each entered the battle for seventh place with one win and two losses behind them in the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison. The tournament host would advance in the bracket regardless of the outcome of the game, but they utilized their home advantage—fueled by a supportive audience of local fans—to solidly pulled ahead and take seventh place with a 190-139 win.

The last day of the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison started with two teams hungry for their first win of the tournament. The battle for ninth place pitted seventh seed No Coast Derby Girls from Lincoln, NE, USA against ninth seed Ohio Roller Derby from Columbus, OH, USA. Historically, the Nebraskans were undefeated in this matchup—until today, when Ohio delivered an upset and their first-ever victory against No Coast with a 227-188 win.
