Ohio Roller Derby of Columbus, OH, USA (seed #9), put up a hard fight against Helsinki Roller Derby of Helsinki, Finland (seed #6), in Game 7 of the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison, but ultimately fell short against Helsinki’s tight defensive walls and quick jammers. Despite some penalty problems early on in the game, Helsinki finished the game with a strong 260-243 victory.

Arch Rival Roller Derby from St. Louis, MO, USA entered Game 6 of the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison with an undefeated season record. As the tournament’s second seed, they’re looking to power through the bracket into a spot at the 2016 WFTDA Championships for the second year in a row. The tenth seeded Mad Rollin’ Dolls from Madison, WI, USA, had already pleased their home crowd with a thrilling back-and-forth game where they clinched the win at the very end against the No Coast Derby Girls from Lincoln, NE, USA. Though Madison put up a good fight with some exciting surges, Arch Rival overpowered the game and took the win, 314-75.

After starting down in game 5 of the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison, Tampa Roller Derby of Tampa, FL, USA, rallied towards the end of the first half to pick up a commanding lead that the carried through to the end of the game. The Tampa Tantrums took a 190-97 victory over Team United Women’s Roller Derby of Des Moines, IA, USA.

After defeating ninth seeded Ohio Roller Derby earlier in the day, the eighth seeded Windy City Rollers from Chicago, IL, USA advanced in the bracket to take on the number one seed of the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison: Gotham Girls Roller Derby from New York, NY, USA. Over the past five years of playoffs, Gotham has beaten their first round opponent by an average of 498 points while keeping the points scored against them to a 17.6 average. The New Yorkers remained consistent today with a blowout 491-13 victory against Windy City.

Game 3 of the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Madison pitted the Minnesota RollerGirls from St. Paul, MN, USA (seed #3) against Helsinki Roller Derby from Helsinki, Finland (seed #6). Both teams came into the tournament with a 6-4 season. Minnesota had faced higher-ranked opponents, winning a game against the Rat City Rollergirls at the Sibling Rivalry Roller Derby Invitational and taking on the 2015 WFTDA Champions, the Rose City Rollers. By contrast, Helsinki’s highest-ranked opponent this season was Rat City and the Finnish team lost to them. Minnesota improved their 2016 record today by taking the win, 337-109.
