Things to Do in Vancouver

Just 20 minutes south of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada lies Richmond, the location for the 2016 International WFTDA D1 Playoff Tournament Sept. 16-18. The Richmond Olympic Oval is located at the mouth of Fraser River, with views to the Pacific Ocean and roller derby’s elite athletes for the tournament weekend.

For those who want to stay track-side for the majority of the weekend, Richmond offers cultural history with museums and restaurants within short distances from the venue and hotel. The Richmond Art Gallery is a short 20-minute walk, and boasts a collection of locally-inspired artworks.

On the way to the museum, take the time to walk through the Minrou Park, a spacious park in the heart of Richmond that is home to walking paths, an aquatic center, and bowling greens. Just south of the park, and adjacent the Richmond Art Gallery is the Richmond Museum, home to a contemporary collection, as well as “artefacts” that delineate the rich heritage of the city.

For film and TV buffs, the opportunities to view your favorite shows’ filming locations are endless. In fact, Richmond is home to the on-site filming of “Once Upon a Time,” and guests can take a tour of the town that calls Storybrooke home. Don’t forget to check out filming locations from X-Files, Deadpool and Hot Tub Time Machine.

On the opposite bank of the Fraser River is the Flying Beaver Bar and Grill, a must-stop for foodies who love a good breakfast or brunch. From the bankside restaurant, you can watch seaplanes depart and land, all while enjoying microbrews and West Coast flavors. The Flying Beaver also offers a shuttle, so if you’re not driving, give them a call.

If you’d like to explore downtown Vancouver, take a 20-minute ride on the Canada Line, part of Vancouver’s SkyTrain. The train will take you across the river to Vancouver’s City Centre or the Waterfront. From the Waterfront, you can get your thrills at Playland Amusement Park, where you can ride the Beast or the Hellevator. The Canada Line will take you to all points north of Richmond, across the Fraser River, and into the heart of Vancouver. You can look up prices and passes HERE.
