Q&A

Who are this year’s captains?
For the majority of our 2013-2014 season, Maria Montoya has been our travel captain, with Pushy Tushy serving as co-captain. Maria's unique leadership vision and Tushy's phenomenal fitness background made for an amazing, positive partnership that created the structure, culture, and set of team expectations that allowed the TCTs to thrive over the past 12 months.

In the summer of 2014, Maria stepped down from TCT captainship, but remains a vital part of our team and a huge contributor to out in-TENT-city, both on and off the track.

Tushy will captain the team for the remainder of the season, with Toaster serving as co-captain. Tushy and Toaster both got their start with the same Arizona recreational league prior to transferring to AZRD in 2012. They have supported one another every step of the way, from "what's a plow stop lol" to "I think I might want to be a Terror." Their close personal relationship and individual strengths make them a natural captain/co-captain pairing, and they are looking forward to leading the TCTs into and through D1 playoffs.

Has your league experienced any retirements, transfers or injuries in the past year that have made a substantial difference in your league’s play and performance?
Our team has seen its share of injuries and retirements, but our play and performance successes have come from more than our individual personnel - our in-TENT-city is more than the sum of our parts.

What are some game highlights from your travel team season this year?
One of our team highlights was definitely our exciting, back-and-forth game with St. Chux at Brewhaha 2014. It was our most competitive game of the season, and came down to the final jam. They were classy, fun opponents and we loved the challenge.

Because of our ranking at the beginning of the season (82), many of our tournament-organized games were ill-matched with some very high point differentials. It was very different to play a bout where we didn't have a cushion of points to make up for our penalties and errors in play.

Another game of note was our March bout against Boulder County. This relatively unknown team with a unique, tight set of strategies provided an awesome opportunity for our team to get creative and try new things...sometimes, with better results than others. Another great group of skaters with excellent attitudes and sportswomanship.

A defining moment of the season was our team winning the 2014 Dust Devil tournament. Our wonderful line manager and 10-season skating veteran, Frenchie, told us with tears in her eyes "I've waited 10 years for this." Doesn't get much more derby-motional than that.

Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.
