Tent City Terrors beat Nashville in Nailbiter

In a back and forth battle of who could keep more bodies on the track, Arizona Roller Derby's Tent City Terrors (seed #10, ranked #39) pulled off the win in the very last jam over the Music City All-Stars of the Nashville Rollergirls (seed #8, ranked #31) to win 183-180 in game 15 of the international Division 1 WFTDA playoffs in Evansville, Indiana.

Arizona grabbed multiple leads and did quick hit-it-and-quit-it jams to keep Nashville scoreless for the first 6 minutes before Big Banger finally was able to put up 3 points, bringing the score to 22-3 for AZRD.

H Face Killa from AZRD was expelled from the game for an egregious lowblock. Arizona used their official review to challenge the expulsion but the call stood.

Loco Lena got stuck behind a tough Nashville wall and Big Banger was able to grab lead and narrow the score gap to 17-28.

Chelsea Dagger jumped to the front in jam 10 and grabbed lead over Atomatrix pushing her team up again to within 10 points of the lead.

After Luz Chaos and Loco Lena helped AZRD pull away 46-28, Nashville called a time out to regroup.

Nashville's Four-Leaf Roller was unfazed when Loco Lena hit her out and ran her back into the pack, Loco then passed the star to Ginger Reeking Havoc and switched to play defense on Four-Leaf. Four-Leaf called it adding another 4 points and called it off.

Jam 18 started with both jammers in the box. Big Banger was released first and obtained lead jammer but Luz Chaos was released quickly and forced the call-off after Nashville earned 4 points.

Atomatrix started a power jam with Chelsea Dagger looking on from the box. She obtained lead and put a total of 11 points on the board while Nashville got stuffed, bringing the score t AZRD 95 - Nashville 44 with 6:00 left to play.

Although Nashville's Doom won lead, Atomatrix was hot on her heels and forced the call-off, ending a 0-0 jam.

Big Banger squared off against Pushy Tush in jam 23, which ended in a 15 point jam for Pushy and Banger sitting in the box.

Luz Chaos started unopposed in a power jam, taking just 8 seconds to earn lead. Spinning around the outside for a 5-point pass and a follow-up 4 more before she called it, keeping Nashville scoreless and AZRD out ahead, 119-54.

Chelsea Dagger jumped on the opportunity to jam while Atomatrix sat in the box and put up a huge 29-point jam to close the gap before halftime, bringing the score to 119-83 in Arizona's favor.

Penalties showed Nashville spending more time in the box with 28 trips, versus Arizona's 22. Besides the ejection of AZRD's blocker H Face Killa, Pushy Tushy and Sigmund Droid were each sitting on 4 penalties. Nashville knew they would need to tread lightly as jammer Big Banger as well as blockers Cole Hearted, Maulin' Monroe, and Lady Fury all had 4 box trips.

Chelsea Dagger started for Nashville and obtained lead over Atomatrix but had to call it at 0-0. Doom jumped at the opportunity of a Nashville power jam as Luz was boxed on a back block. She was able to put up 14 points and close the gap on AZRD. But Loco Lena immediately answered back with 8 of her own, bringing the score to 127-97 with 25:00 left to play.

Doom and Big Banger pulled within 11 points with two back-to-back power jams and the Nashville blockers seemed to have found AZRD's number as Chelsea Dagger got out, won lead, and found four points nearly untouched, to end the jam at 134-117. AZRD still led but by only 17.

When Nashville's hustle brought the game to within 9 points, AZRD called a time out to try and refocus the pack who had been steadily displaced by the blockers in blue. Finally, AZRD was able to field all four blockers as they had rotating penalties for the last several jams. Atomatrix got out with lead and 15 points after an unfortunate track cut on Doom to land at 148-130 for AZRD.

After Chelsea Dagger was sent to the box on a low block while trying to clip Atomatrix, Luz Chaos started unopposed but ended up with a track cut. Dagger escaped the box, spun through the pack and obtained lead. When Luz was released she got another back block penalty, but Dagger twas right behind her on a forearm call. Despite penalty box dancing, Nashville found 19 points, bringing the score to 148-160 for AZRD.

Nashville called a time out knowing that anything can happen in the 10 minutes of derby remaining. Atomatrix got lead while Dagger was sitting and pushed the lead to 169-148.

Doom grabs a 5-0 jam on the next rotation to keep it within 16 points. Jam 23 saw Dagger grab lead and Atomatrix earned a high block penalty. The Nashville fans got up and got loud as AZRD was down to two lonely blockers on the track. Their efforts were awarded with a lead change after Dagger put up a total of 17 points.

Nashville found themselves in the lead 174-169 and AZRD called a time out with 4:59 remaining in game play.

Luz grabbed lead on the next jam but it was 0-0 and AZRD lost Ginger Reeking Havoc after her 7th penalty. Nashville used their official review at the 3:19 mark to double check points, which were deemed correct.

Big Banger grabbed lead and another 3 points, bringing the score to 180-169. Dagger burned some clock time in the next jam after Luz escaped just behind her and the pack sped up for a 0-0 jam.

Atomatrix grabbed lead and 5 points, calling it off and then AZRD immediately called a timeout. With 41 seconds left to play, Luz and Dagger took the jam line. A surprising full 8-blocker pack was on the floor and only 7 points separated the teams.

Luz got lead while Dagger was stuck in the pack behind Loco Lena, Toaster, and Droid. With a 10-point jam, AZRD grabbed the lead, called it off and took the win over Nashville. Final score: 180-183 Arizona.

Arizona finishes in 5th after coming into the tournament at 10th. Nashville finishes 6th, rising two spots.
