In what looked like it would be an easy win for Ohio Roller Girls (seed 5, rank #20) of Columbus, Ohio, USA, the Houston Roller Derby (seed 9, rank #36) of Houston, Texas, USA used a rally in the second half of Game 13 of Day 3 at the international WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in Evansville. The rally wasn’t enough to stop the Ohio team, though, as the ladies in green defeated Houston 209-129.
The first ten minutes of the game were close, with both teams scoring back-and-forth; The Smacktivist scored the opening points for Ohio, while go-to jammer Freight Train put the first points on the board for Houston. The point spread stayed small, with Ohio up 15-12 over Houston. The Ohio defense put the Houston jammer on lock down after the 20:00 minute mark, racking up 57 points to Houston’s three.
Houston got a bit of a break, however, as jammer Freight Train pulled off a 14-point jam when Houston blockers held Ohio’s Sarah Bruce back. Going into the half, Ohio had a strong lead over Houston, 121-32.
Penalties remained a problem for the skaters from Houston, as Ohio continued to roll away with points in the second half. The point spread stayed relatively even around 90 points from the half, as Houston managed a few point surges, holding back Ohio’s strong jammer The Smacktivist on a few jams.
Houston’s Mistilla grabbed 17 points with just over 11 minutes left in the game, but Ohio’s Kitty Liquorbottom quickly responded to score to keep Ohio’s lead firm.
Never daunted by the grabs for lead, Ohio remained dominant over Houston throughout the game. Houston used its remaining timeouts in the final minutes of the game in an attempt to shift momentum, but to no avail. Ohio Roller Girls defeated Houston Roller Derby 209-129.
Ohio Roller Girls (seed 5, rank #20) falls four in tournament seeding to end in ninth place.
Houston Roller Derby (seed 9, rank #36) falls one seed in tournament play to finish tenth.
