East, West regions dominate first day of Nationals

Four teams advanced to the next round of play after the first day of the Womens Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) National Tournament November 13th, 2009 all from the East and West WFTDA regions.  

The Boston Derby Dames, the #3 seed from the East Region, eked out a 105-98 win over the Mad Rollin’ Dolls (#2 North Central) in the first bout of the tournament. Boston will face the #1 seed from the South Central Region, the Texas Rollergirls, at 10 a.m. EST Nov. 14.

The #1 seed from each of the four WFTDA regional tournaments earned a first-round bye.

The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (#2 West) toppled Houston Roller Derby (#3 South Central), winning 239-46. Rocky Mountain will face tournament hosts and #1 East Region seed Philly Roller Girls Saturday at 11:45 a.m. EST

Continuing the Mile High City’s dominance, 2007 National Champions Kansas City Roller Warriors (#2 South Central) fell to the Denver Roller Dolls (#3 West) 175-89. Denver will play the Windy City Rollers (#1 North Central) Saturday afternoon. That bout is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. EST.

In the final bout of the day Friday, defending 2008 National Champions Gotham Girls Roller Derby put away a challenge from the Detroit Derby Girls 187-38. Gotham advances to battle the #1 seeded upstarts from the West Region, the Oly Rollers, at 3:15 p.m. EST.

Winners of the four morning bouts Saturday will advance to a semifinal round that evening. The seminfinals will determine which teams will advance to the championship game and which will be battling it out for third and fourth place. The final two games will be played on Sunday, Sept. 15.
