Wichita Old Town

Wichita Old Town

In the heart of Wichita the Old Town district thrives. There you’ll find a farmer’s market on Saturday mornings, locally-owned boutiques and shops, plus several bars and restaurants open for lunch and dinner. Mort’s Martini Bar serves some of the best drinks in town, and the patio features live music most nights. For folks who like flair for their meals, stroll the brick-lined streets to Old Town Square for a feast of Latin-inspired dishes at Sabor, vegan and gluten-free options at Lotus Leaf Café, or Vietnamese flavors at Lemongrass.

Keeper of the Plains

Also located in downtown Wichita is the majestic Keeper of the Plains, a large, fire-lit sculpture at the head of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers. The Keeper stands at the center of the museum corridor. The Wichita Art Museum boasts a collection of American art, specifically art that recognizes the heritage of the Great Plains, including Mary Cassatt portraits, Chihuly glass and Prairie printmakers. For science lovers, Exploration Place is an ideal destination, with hands-on exhibits. Botanica, Wichita’s grand garden, is beautiful in the summer months, with gardens galore.

The Sedgwick-County Zoo is nationally recognized for its exhibits and treks. Opened this year on Memorial Day, the Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley made its debut, featuring six new elephants. The Slawson Family Tiger Trek and the Downing Gorilla Forest are also must-see stops while hoofing through the zoo’s 248 acres. The zoo is part of the Sedgwick County Park, Wichita’s largest park, featuring bike trails and walking paths, as well as fishing lakes.

For small business fans, check out the Douglas Design District, just a 10-minute drive from the venue. The Workroom features goods made by local artists, including swag fitted with Wichita’s iconic flag. Central Standard Brewing and Hopping Gnome brew local beers; you’ll definitely want to ask about Hopping Gnome’s Roller Girl Rye-PA. And for late-night donut needs, check out the Donut Whole, Wichita’s original donut destination; the dining room is open until midnight, and the drive-thru is 24-hours. You can’t miss the building; it’s got a huge rooster atop the neon sign.
