Oly Rollers Win Western Regionals

October 5, 2009

After a weekend packed with intense, close match-ups and multiple upsets, the Oly Rollers of Olympia, WA, came out on top of the WFTDA West Region. While they entered the tournament as the #1 seed, this was the first WFTDA tournament experience for Oly, a league that is just over two years old and has had a fast race to the top of the West after joining the Women's Flat Track Derby Association in April 2008.

Derby on the Rocks co-hosts Rocky Mountain Rollergirls and Denver Roller Dolls proved their mettle, both earning slots in the WFTDA National Tournament. #8 seed Rocky Mountain solidified their spot in the first-ever bout between the two Denver-area leagues, which provided plenty of excitement for local fans as Rocky Mountain came from behind in the last few minutes of the back-and-forth to beat Denver 122-107.

Rocky Mountain took second in the tournament, with an additional upset win over #3 seed Rose City Rollers along the way. Denver held on to third place, with solid wins over Angel City Derby Girls (#10 seed) in the first round and #4 seed Rat City Rollergirls in the 3rd/4th place game on Sunday.
