Rose City Rollers Win Charleston Playoffs, Championships Seeding Set

The final WFTDA Playoffs of 2014, held Oct. 3-5 in Charleston, West Virginia, added a fifth country to the roster of the international 2014 WFTDA Championships, to be held Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Nashville, Tennessee. Victorian Roller Derby League, of Melbourne, became the first-ever Australian team to qualify for WFTDA Championships and placed second in the Charleston Playoffs.
Joining VRDL in Nashville will be the Rose City Rollers, of Portland, Oregon, USA who won the Charleston Playoffs, and the Philly Roller Girls who finished 3rd after a hard-fought win over the Atlanta Rollergirls, of Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Rose City’s Loren Mutch was the MVP from the Charleston Playoffs.
Although the top seeds in Charleston all defended their spots, the lower half of the bracket saw upsets and close games, most notably the thrilling 1-point game in which 7 seed Mad Rollin’ Dolls, of Madison, Wisconsin, USA defeated the 6 seed Boston Derby Dames. Madison went on to upset the Naptown Roller Girls and take 5th Place.

With the final WFTDA Playoffs of 2014 now in the history books, we now know all 12 D1 teams and four D2 teams that will be competing at Championships. At the conclusion of the Charleston Playoffs, the Championships bracket for the D1 teams was set by random drawing. The winners of each of the four D1 Playoffs get a first round bye, while the 2nd Place team from each playoff bracket faces a 3rd Place finisher from a different playoff bracket. The winner of those games will go on to play a #1 seed from a third playoff bracket.

The four Division 2 teams competing at Championships will each play one game. The Detroit Derby Girls, of Detroit, Michigan, and Rideau Valley Rollergirls, of Ottawa, ON, Canada, will compete for the Division 2 Championship title. The Fabulous Sin City Rollergirls, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Bear City Roller Derby, of Berlin, Germany will compete in the Division 2 Third Place game.
