The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association has released the results from its 2012 demographic survey of roller derby fans, skaters and support staff. More than 8,000 people from around the world responded to this year’s survey, with about 35 percent identifying themselves as fans and the remainder consisting of sports participants.
While the demographic profile of roller derby fans and skaters has remained relatively consistent since the WFTDA first began surveying its audience in 2010, this year’s report reflects the growing interest in the sport outside of the United States. About 20 percent of this year’s survey respondents were based outside of the U.S., compared to 12 percent last year.
According to the survey, the roller derby audience remains predominately female (about 61 percent) and has an average age of 37. The average skater age is a bit younger, at 31. The vast majority of fans (83 percent) have at least some college education, and respondents reported an even distribution of household incomes.
