Flat track derby growing fast

April 5, 2010

AUSTIN, TX - At first glance, you may not believe that women's flat track derby is a bonafide sport. Texas Rollergirl Amy Hutchins-Collins said it's easy to be stereotyped as a fake sport.

"Yes we wear spandex. Some people wear dresses. Some people wear underwear on the outside of their pants," Hutchins-Collins said.

The Texas Rollergirls are a legitimate sport. In fact, they are a part of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association recognized around the world. It's a sport that was created right here in Austin in 2003 by a bunch of women responding to an ad in a bar.

"We basically didn't know what we were doing," Hutchins-Collins said.

Financially strapped, the women opted away from the traditional bank track derby featured in the movie "Whip It" and decided to create a completely new sport.

"We couldn't pay for something like that, nor had we ever stepped on one of those things, so we basically developed the sport on the floor," Hutchins-Collins said. "It's a sport you could take anywhere."
