WFTDA Launches Rules Central

July 14, 2011

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) has unveiled the new Rules Central section on the WFTDA website that includes Rules Publications, previously referred to as Rules Clarifications, that were answers found on the old Rules Q&A. You can find Rules Central by visiting http://wftda.com/rules

Rules Q&A will still exist as a place to discuss rules questions that are addressed in the rules. Rules Publications are issued by the WFTDA Rules Committee to address a dead spot in the WFTDA rules and clear up confusion or help steer any incorrect interpretations back to the original intent of those rules.

"The WFTDA Rules Committee constantly has its finger on the pulse of the rules. The Rules Publications we issue are not reactionary; they are thoroughly discussed and debated by the Committee before any statement is made," said Johnny Aquino, aka “Johnny Roastbeef,” Chair of the WFTDA Rules Committee.

The launch of the new Rules Central section coincides with the release of a new Rules Publication regarding pre-jam starting position (where blockers line up at the start of the jam).

"The Rules Committee had been talking for weeks before East Coast Derby Extravaganza about this issue,” Aquino said. “The committee feels, with regard to pre-jam positioning, it is in the best interest of the sport that we issue specific guidance and interpretation to bring those rules back to their original intent, which we also hope will result in more exciting game play and a better fan experience."

Rules Central has also been updated by the Rules Committee with all relevant information that previously did not have an appropriate public avenue for release.

"As an organization, we're working hard to create new resources to better inform the roller derby community outside the WFTDA," according to Games Officer Heather “Ms. D'fiant” Watson.

Rules Q&A will be updated regularly with questions asked and submitted by skaters and fans through the link on the Rules Central site. The Rules Publications will be updated as deemed necessary by WFTDA and the WFTDA Rules Committee.

WFTDA encourages all leagues to familiarize themselves with the new Rules Central and Rules Publications.
