2015 International WFTDA Championships Named Event of the Year

May 20, 2016

Visit Saint Paul, the tourism board of Saint Paul, Minnesota, has named the International WFTDA Championships the Event of the Year for 2015. Hosted by the Minnesota RollerGirls, last year’s WFTDA Championships brought athletes, officials and fans from around the world to the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium for an unforgettable weekend of roller derby.

The weekend was packed with amazing moments: the first time an Australian team medaled in Championships, the first time roller derby was shown on ESPN3, the first time the defending four-time world champions had lost a game in five years, and the first time since 2012 that the host league qualified for Championships. There were more fans in attendance than any of the last three years, creating an electric atmosphere for watching the ground-breaking game play.

Jenna Reider (apple) and Heather Stafford-Gay (Dark Ginger) from the Minnesota RollerGirls and Alisha Campbell, WFTDA Tournament Director, were present to accept the award from Visit Saint Paul.

The WFTDA would again like to thank the Minnesota RollerGirls, Visit Saint Paul, our sponsors, the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to support the event and, of course, the athletes, for making it a weekend to remember!

Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.
