December 2009 Featured Skater: Joy Collision

December 5, 2009

Charm City's Joy Collision made waves in 2009, breaking the WFTDA tournament record for number of points scored in one jam in the Eastern Regional Tournament, scoring 30 points against the DC Rollergirls at the 2009 WFTDA Eastern Regional tournament (breaking Duke' City's Kamikaze Kim's record of 25 points, set at Westerns the previous year). We'd like to tell you a little more about this amazing skater.

What is your (roller derby) position of choice?
Any position

What is your skate gear of choice?
695 [Riedell] boot, Reactor plates, Bones Swiss bearings, G-Rods

Do you have a pre-bout ritual?
Playing mommy, herding the cats, giving pep talks

What are some of your best/favorite moments in roller derby?
Winning the CCRG championship with the Night Terrors in 2006; Beating the Minnesota Rollergirls in 2007 after being smashed by Rose City; Losing at Regionals in 2009, and seeing how much it brought our team together.

Who are your roller derby heroes?
Dolly Rocket [CCRG], Charm City Rollergirls, Windy City Rollers, FSOP, Texas Rollergirls, Carolina Rollergirls, Providence Roller Derby, anyone who plays with a smile.

Do you have a roller derby motto?
I always tell the girls during endurance practice, "There's nothing you can't do!"

What goes through your brain as you lace up your skates?
How is my team feeling?

Do you have a theme song?
I don't have one. I'm sure my theme song should be a Joy Division song, but in reality, I'm much more likely to have a theme song by Motley Crue.

Do you have a signature move?
I try to be good at everything.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in roller derby?
Keep an open mind. Get health insurance.

Anyone you'd like to take the opportunity to thank?
Thanks to everyone from CCRG for believing in me.

What was going through your mind as you were jamming in that 30-point jam?
I had scored as many as 35 points in a jam during practice, so I just kept saying to myself, "It's just like practice... keep going." I felt like I just kept pushing myself faster and faster as the clock was winding down. This jam was text book for my pack. It was not a power jam and all the blockers remained in the pack for most of the jam. My blockers did a great job keeping it slow and stopping the other jammer. I hope the record sticks for a while.
