June 2014 Featured League: Rock n Roller Queens

This month’s featured league continued their pioneering roller derby ways when they became the first WFTDA member league in South America. Since 2009, Colombia’s Rock n Roller Queens have been contributing to the global growth of roller derby, and the WFTDA. The Rock n Roller Queens are keenly aware that their accomplishments are the result of every skaters’ efforts, and they aim to be role models for all women in their community. Read on to learn more about the WFTDA featured league for June, the Rock n Roller Queens of Bogota, Colombia.

What city are you based in? We are located in the capital of Colombia, Bogotá.

¿En qué ciudad residen? Estamos localizados en la capital de Colombia, Bogotá.

The Rock n Roller Queens are not only the first WFTDA member league from Colombia, but also from all of South America. Congratulations! What made you decide to pursue WFTDA membership? What challenges did you face in the process?
We have always wanted to compete in a professional manner, and to achieve it we had to be in the association where the best teams in the world are. It was our goal from the start of our league. It has been difficult, because it has taken us much time and money to achieve these objectives. We are so far away from all the WFTDA member leagues that we would like to compete against, but with small steps we’re getting there.

Las Rock n Roller Queens no solo son la primera liga miembro de la WFTDA de Colombia, sino también de toda América del Sur. ¡Felicitaciones! ¿Qué hizo que ustedes decidieran buscar la membresía de la WFTDA? ¿Qué retos enfrentaron durante el proceso?
Siempre hemos querido competir de manera profesional, y para alcanzarlo teníamos que estar en la asociación donde están los mejores equipos del mundo. Fue nuestro objetivo desde el inicio de nuestra liga. Ha sido difícil, por que nos ha llevado mucho tiempo y dinero alcanzar estos objetivos, estamos lejos de todas las ligas con las que nos gustaría competir, pero con pequeños pasos lo vamos logrando.

Please tell us a bit about roller derby in South America. As the first WFTDA member league from South America, how do the Rock n Roller Queens work to encourage the growth of roller derby in South America?
South America’s roller derby has grown significantly. It began in Argentina and Colombia, and is now in more countries, such as Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, and Uruguay. In Colombia we have 18 leagues, and we have zone tournaments and national tournaments each year. We have organized many roller derby activities in our country, like the first Boot Camp Colombia 2011, with Ivanna S. Pankin and Trish the Dish, and the most recent one was with the Gotham Girls Roller Derby in March 2013. We organized the first Colombia roller derby tournament in 2012 in Bogotá, and the first officials’ training with Erik Rawk. In March 2013, we hosted the first Latin American WFTDA Officiating Clinic. In August 2013, we hosted the first Latin American tournament in Bogotá. The leagues that attended were: Toxic Lima from Peru, Metropolitan from Chile, Ladies of Hell Town and Gray City Rebels from Brazil, 2x4 from Argentina, Catrinas from Mexico, and the best three Colombian leagues: Bone Breakers, Combativas Revoltosas, and Rock and Roller Queens. It was an excellent start to the Roller Derby Latino, we hope to do it again in 2015. All these activities have contributed to the growth of roller derby in our country, and in Latin America.

Por favor, díganos un poco sobre el roller derby en América del Sur. Como la primera liga miembro de la WFTDA de América del Sur, ¿cómo trabaja Rock n Roller Queens para fomentar el crecimiento del roller derby en América del Sur?
En Suramerica ha crecido mucho el Roller Derby, empezó en Argentina y Colombia, ahora en más países, Brasil, Chile, Perú, Ecuador, Uruguay. En Colombia hay 18 ligas, tenemos torneos por zonas y torneos nacionales cada año. Desde nuestros inicios hemos organizado diferentes actividades de Roller Derby en nuestro país, como el primer Boot Camp Colombia 2011 con Ivanna S. Pankin y Trish the Dish, el ultimo fue con Gotham Girls Roller Derby en marzo de 2013. Organizamos el Primer Torneo Roller Derby Colombia 2012, en Bogotá, y a su vez hicimos la primera capacitación arbitral con Erik Rawk . En marzo de 2013 realizamos la primera Clínica de Árbitros avalada por la WFTDA en Suramérica. En agosto de 2013 fuimos anfitrionas del Primer Torneo Latinoamericano de Roller Derby en Bogotá, donde asistieron las ligas Toxic Lima de Perú, Metropolitan de Chile, Ladies of Hell Town y Gray City Rebels de Brasil, 2x4 de Argentina, Catrinas de México y las mejores tres ligas Colombianas, Bone Breakers, Combativas Revoltosas y Rock and Roller Queens. Fue un excelente inicio para el Roller Derby Latino, esperamos hacerlo de nuevo en el 2015. Todas estas actividades han hecho que el Derby crezca en nuestro país y latinoamerica.

How does your season run?
Our season starts in January and we take December for off-season. In March and April we have bootcamps, from June to August we have Latin American and national tournaments, and now that we are in the WFTDA, we hope travel in May and look forward to other dates for competition.

¿Cómo funciona su temporada?
Nuestra temporada empieza en enero, y en diciembre cerramos temporada, en marzo y abril tenemos bootcamps, entre junio y agosto torneos nacionales y latinoamericanos, y ahora que estamos en la WFTDA esperamos viajar en mayo y buscar otras fechas de competencia.

What are the closest WFTDA leagues to you?
In South America, we have the Apprentice Program leagues in Brazil and Argentina. The closest leagues in the United States are in Florida.

¿Cuáles son las ligas WFTDA más cerca de ustedes?
En Suramerica tenemos cerca las ligas aprendices de Brasil y Argentina. Las ligas mas cercanas en Estados Unidos son las de Florida.

How many skaters/teams do you have?
We have two teams (Team A and Team B) competing in national tournaments, one travel team, and a fresh meat group. Including volunteers, we are approximately 50 members.

¿Cuántos patinadores/equipos tienen ustedes?
Tenemos 2 equipos (equipo A y equipo B) que compiten en torneos nacionales, el equipo de viaje y carne fresca, incluyendo voluntarios somos aproximadamente 50 miembros.

How is your league structured (home teams, travel team, management)?
We have several committees: a committee of coaches (we have three coaches, two of skating technique, and one of roller derby), a committee of design and advertising, a committee of fresh meat, a merch and uniform committee, a finance and treasury committee, and an officials’ committee. Each committee is supported in ways that depend on the activity to be performed. Our home teams are Team A: Rock and Roller, and Team B: Queens. The travel team is made up mostly of skaters from Team A, and some of the Team B skaters recently passed to A.

¿Cómo está estructurada su liga? (equipo local, equipo viajero, administrativamente)
Tenemos varios comités, comité de entrenadores (tenemos tres entrenadores, dos de técnica de patinaje, y uno de Roller Derby), un comité de diseño y publicidad, comité de carne fresca, comité de mercancía y uniformes, comité de finanzas y tesorería y un comité de oficiales. Cada comité se apoya depende la actividad que se vaya a realizar. Los equipos de casa son el A: Rock and Roller y el equipo B: Queens. El equipo de viaje son en su mayoría jugadoras de la A y algunas de la B que pasaron hace poco a la A.

Who is your biggest rival? And have you had any outstanding, memorable moments against them when you bouted?
Our biggest rival was Maine Roller Derby, in the last game at the Beach Brawl tournament (hosted by the Gold Coast Derby Grrls). They are very strong girls. And in the Latin American tournament, the last game of the final against Argentina 2x4 was intense. We were playing at home, and lost by a few points. It was a game we wanted to win.

¿Quién es su mayor rival? Y, ¿han tenido algunos momentos destacados y memorables cuando han jugado contra ellos?
Hasta el momento nuestro mayor rival fue Maine Roller Derby, en el ultimo torneo Beach Brawl, son unas chicas muy fuertes. Y en el torneo latinoamericano el ultimo partido de la final contra 2x4 de Argentina fue muy intenso, estábamos jugando en casa, y perdimos por muy pocos puntos. Fue un partido que queríamos ganar.

Do you have any sister leagues you’d like to give a shout out to?
Yes, definitely our big sisters are the Gotham Girls. They taught us a lot and we all have a great relationship.

¿Tienen alguna liga hermana a la que les gustaría agradecer públicamente?
Si, definitivamente nuestras hermanas mayores son las Gotham Girls. Nos han enseñado mucho y tenemos una gran relación.

We understand that some of the skaters from Gotham Girls Roller Derby have traveled to visit the Rock n Roller Queens. What did you learn from this visit? Did you have a chance to compete against the WFTDA Champions?
The time spent with Gotham made us realize that even though we are currently the best team in Colombia, we still have a lot of work to do, and we need to continue practicing individually and as a team to reach a much higher level. Playing with the best team in the world, the Gotham Girls, opened our minds, and inspired us to reach their level someday with our commitment and hard work.

Nosotros entendemos que algunas de las patinadoras de las Gotham Girls Roller Derby han viajado a visitar a Rock n Roller Queens. ¿Qué aprendieron de esta visita? ¿Tuvieron oportunidad de competir contra las Campeonas WFTDA?
La visita de las Gotham nos hizo darnos cuenta de que a pesar de que en estos momentos somos la mejor liga de Colombia, todavía tenemos mucho trabajo que hacer y tenemos que seguir practicando de forma individual y en equipo para llegar a un nivel mucho más alto. Jugar con el mejor equipo del mundo abrió nuestras mentes y nos inspiro a llegar a ese nivel de competencia con trabajo duro y compromiso.

What are the individual challenges of your city?
We do not have a venue for bouts to raise funds because the owner of the venue is the government and we cannot charge money from the attendees. As a result, the public sees our games for free, and we lose the ability to raise funds for our purposes.

¿Cuáles son los retos particulares de su ciudad?
No tenemos un espacio donde poder hacer partidos para recaudar fondos, por que los espacios donde entrenamos son del estado y no se puede cobrar al publico,

entonces las personas 

que van a ver nuestros partidos entran gratis y perdemos la posibilidad de recaudar fondos para nuestros objetivos.

What are your biggest training challenges?
We train in an outdoor location, and in the rainy season the trainings are canceled. Sometimes we are able to train in an indoor venue, but a lot of times it is occupied by other conventional sports. 



¿Cuáles son sus mayores retos en términos de entrenamiento?
Nosotros entrenamos en un lugar descubierto, en épocas de lluvia se cancelan entrenamientos, y tenemos la posibilidad de entrenar en un coliseo cubierto pero casi siempre esta ocupado por otros deportes convencionales. 




You have hosted WFTDA Officiating Education instructors in Bogota. How did your league benefit from this experience?
This clinic was very important! Without officials, we cannot compete. We can say, we have a number of very good officials thanks to this clinic. They have the right knowledge about the sport, not just for our league, for all of Colombia. This helped a lot. We are in the process of recruiting more officials to develop this group.

Ustedes han recibido instructores de Educación de Oficiales de la WFTDA en Bogotá. ¿Cómo se benefició su liga de esta experiencia?
Fue muy importante! Sin árbitros no podríamos competir. Podemos decir que ya tenemos oficiales capacitados gracias a esta clínica y con el conocimiento correcto sobre el deporte, no solo para nosotras si no para toda Colombia. Nos sirvió mucho hacer esta clínica. Estamos en proceso de convocar mas oficiales para que este grupo crezca.

What kind of training/bouting facilities do you have?
We train at an outdoor track three days a week, and two days a week at an indoor hockey rink. For tournaments, we have available a venue with a capacity of 3,000 spectators.

¿Qué clase de instalaciones para entrenamientos/encuentros tienen ustedes?
Entrenamos en una pista de patinaje descubierta 3 dias a la semana, y 2 dias a la semana en una pista de hockey cubierta. Para torneos tenemos disponible un coliseo con capacidad de 3.000 espectadores.

How many days a week do you practice? How are your practices divided/organized among your teams/skaters?
We train five days a week. All skaters are welcome to each practice, but we do divide our skaters by skill level. We scrimmage on Saturdays, and Sundays the class is only for fresh meat.

¿Cuántos días a la semana practican?¿Cómo están divididas/organizadas entre sus equipos/patinadoras?
Entrenamos 5 días a la semana. Todas las patinadoras de todos los niveles están invitadas a todas las clases, pero las dividimos en niveles de patinaje. Los sábados tenemos scrimmage y los domingos la clase es solo para carne fresca.

Who are some “behind the scenes” skaters/members who really help your league run?
All skaters have a role in the league, even those with an injury also contribute. Mapi handles all the paperwork and league management, Burbuja handles treasury and finance, and Angie, Colors, Ale and Mordiscos do the advertising and design. Gatho is responsible for Fresh Meat, Minerva organizes training spaces and Rebel Queens, and March and Ereshkigal handle our merchandise and uniforms. Mar and Mafereak are responsible for meetings and local tournaments, Chili is our official photographer, etc. There are many activities that all contribute to the league.

¿Quiénes son algunos de los patinadores/miembros "tras bambalinas" que realmente ayudan en el funcionamiento de su liga?
Todas las patinadoras tenemos una función en la liga, incluso las que tienen una lesión también aportan. Mapi se encarga de todo el papeleo de la liga y la gestión, Burbuja de la tesorería y finanzas, Angie, Colors, Ale y Mordiscos del la publicidad y el diseño, Gatho de las Carne Fresca, Minerva de los espacios de entrenamiento y junto con Rebel Queens, March y Kathe de mercancía y uniformes, Mar y Mafe de las reuniones y torneos locales, Chili es nuestra fotógrafa oficial, hay muchas actividades en la liga que todas aportan.

Who are some of your star skaters on the track, and why?
We have very good jammers – Tsunami and Ale – and in the pack, Collette is a comprehensive, strong, and intelligent player and is the youngest on the team. Another star blocker is Ereshkigal. In our league, no player is more special than the other, they all have a talent and all contribute to the league to be the best!

¿Quiénes son algunas de sus patinadoras estrellas en la pista, y por qué?
Tenemos unas muy buenas jammers, Tsunami, Ale y de las bloqueadoras Collette es una jugadora muy completa, fuerte e inteligente y además es la menor en edad del equipo. Otra Bloqueadora destacada es Ereshkigal, entre otras. En nuestra liga ninguna jugadora es mas especial que la otra, todas tienen talento y todas aportan a la liga para ser las mejores!

In May, the Rock n Roller Queens traveled to Florida to compete in Beach Brawl, your first WFTDA tournament (hosted by the Gold Coast Derby Grrls). This was an incredible experience for your league: how did you prepare for the tournament?
We worked hard both mentally and physically for this tournament for almost six months before we signed on to participate in the tournament. Our new coach, Matador, was very helpful in defining clearer strategies and encouraging more solid blocking work.

En mayo, las Rock n Roller Queens viajaron a Florida a competir en Beach Brawl, su primer torneo WFTDA (organizado por las Gold Coast Derby Grrls). Esta fue una experiencia increíble para su liga: ¿cómo se prepararon para el torneo?
Trabajamos fuerte mental y físicamente para este torneo casi seis meses antes desde que nos inscribimos al torneo. Con nuestro nuevo entrenador Matador definimos estrategias más claras y un trabajo mas sólido de bloque.

What were some of the Rock n Roller Queens’ favorite moments from the Beach Brawl tournament? What lessons did you learn from the experience?
We started the first bout with a lot of expectations. We were really excited to win, and we realized that we are at a good level, and we can become better. After this tournament, we must reevaluate our game, and our strengths and weaknesses. We found the players in the United States to be very athletic and strong, and of course they have many years of experience, but we believe with hard work we can reach that level someday. Measuring our knowledge for the first time with teams from the USA is an experience that every team in South America should have. The audience, the host Gold Coast Derby Grrls, and all their members attended our games, cheered for and admired us. When they played the “Cumbia” (a typical song of Colombia) at the end of our first bout, it was a great surprise and very exciting. The announcers yelled when our jammer passed the pack, and we felt we represented our country very well, and we did it with all the effort and our hearts. Thank you so much everyone!

¿Cuáles fueron algunos de los momentos favoritos de las Rock n Roller Queens en el torneo de Beach Brawl? ¿Qué lecciones aprendieron de esta experiencia?
Empezamos el primer juego, con una gran expectativa, nos emociono mucho ganar, nos dimos cuenta que tenemos buen nivel y que podemos llegar a ser mejores, debemos reevaluar nuestro juego, nuestras fortalezas y debilidades, nos encontramos con que las jugadoras en Estados Unidos son muy atléticas y fuertes, y por supuesto nos llevan muchos años de experiencia, pero creemos que con trabajo fuerte podemos alcanzar ese nivel. Medir nuestros conocimientos por primera vez con equipos de USA es una experiencia que todos los equipos de Suramérica deberían tener. Nos sentimos muy bien atendidas y admiradas por los asistentes y por el anfitrión Gold Coast Derby Grrls y todos su miembros, cuando pusieron la “Cumbia” canción típica de Colombia, al final de uno de los partidos fue una gran sorpresa y muy emocionante, los narradores gritaban cuando nuestras jammer pasaban, sentimos que estamos representando muy bien a nuestro país y lo hacemos con todo el esfuerzo y corazón. Muchas gracias a todos!

We understand that you have hosted two Colombian tournaments. What differences did you see between the first and second years? Are you planning to host another tournament this year?
The level improved a lot in the second tournament. The teams were more organized, with a clear structure, defined positions, and the officials, skaters, and coaches have a much clearer knowledge of the rules. All these things make us better and more experienced players and officials. This year we have a district tournament in Bogota on June 1st, and the national tournament on August 7th.

Nosotros sabemos que ustedes han organizado dos torneos colombianos. ¿Qué diferencias vieron entre el primer y el segundo año? ¿Están planeando organizar otro torneo este año?
El nivel subió mucho en el segundo torneo, los equipos se ven mas organizados, con una estructura clara, posiciones definidas, los oficiales, patinadoras y entrenadores mas atentos y en general con un conocimiento de las reglas mucho más claro y completo. Todo esto hace nos hace mejores jugadores y oficiales con más experiencia y mejor capacitados. Este año tenemos en Bogotá el torneo distrital el 1 de junio, y el torneo nacional el 7 de agosto.

How does your league give back to the community?
As women practicing in Colombia, we build new sporting opportunities and different life projects for a wide range of women, and help to create healthy habits. The popularization of this sport in Colombia brings experience to include women who are professionals, university students and graduates, housewives from different social classes, and women of different ages. The lack of free time for women, by a strong social and biological demand, complicates women’s opportunities to find a place to grow. Roller derby is solution to this difficulty. It provides security, and can be performed as a woman and as a person. A large percentage of our players are mothers, and there are many single mothers. We propose the development of new activities, giving women a central role in their lives, by strengthening sports, and making decisions in all areas of their life and sport.

¿Qué hace su liga por la comunidad?
Como práctica Femenina en Colombia, construye nuevas oportunidades deportivas y distintos proyectos de vida a un amplio rango de mujeres, creando hábitos saludables. La masificación de esta experiencia deportiva en Colombia lleva a incluir a mujeres que en su mayoría son profesionales, estudiantes universitarias y bachilleres, amas de casa de distintas clases sociales y de edades diversas. La falta de tiempo libre en las mujeres, por una demanda social y biológica intensa, complica el hallar un espacio de crecimiento propio, siendo el Roller Derby la solución para esta dificultad, aporta seguridad, permite realizarse como mujer y como persona. Un gran porcentaje de nuestras jugadoras son madres, muchas de ellas madres cabeza de familia.

 Proponemos el desarrollo de nuevas actividades, brindando a las mujeres un papel protagonista en sus vidas, mediante el fortalecimiento deportivo, y toma de decisiones de todos los ámbitos de su vida , mediante el deporte.
