WFTDA West Region Playoffs Day 1 Wrap Up

Bridgetown Brawl rolled out Friday, September 23, bringing together the best of the West Region at the historic Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon for the second WFTDA playoff tournament of 2011.

There were no early upsets, as #8 Jet City Rollergirls advanced to face #1 seed Oly Rollers, and #7 Sacred City Derby Girls advanced to try their luck against last year's champions and current #2 in the west, Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. The higher seeds also prevailed in the second round of bouts for the day.

"We had things we wanted to prove to ourselves we could do...when we executed those things, we scored," said Shadow Solider from Sacred City taking the loss to last year's WFTDA champions in stride.

The quarterfinals had two match ups that were both seen in West Region tournaments past: #5 Rose City Rollers vs #4 B.ay Area. D.erby Girls, and Rat City Rollergirls vs Denver Roller Dolls. Rose City had never defeated Bay Area in tournament play, but triumphed for the first time in a 139-120 victory.

The only upset of the day came in the final game of the evening, with the #6 Rat City Rollergirls toppling the Denver Roller Dolls.

Rat City goes on to face Rocky Mountain in the semifinals on Day 2, and Rose City will match up against Oly Rollers in the semifinals for the second year in a row.

• Jet City Rollergirls 168 (#8)
  Tucson Roller Derby 100 (#9)
  Jet City advanced to play Oly later in the day; Tucson Roller Derby will play Denver on Day 2.

• Sacred City Derby Girls 136 (#10)
  Angel City Derby Girls 111 (#7)
  Sacred City advanced to play Rocky Mountain later in the day; [Angel City Derby Girls(/leagues/angel-city) will play Bay Area on Day 2.

• Oly Rollers 239 (#1)
  Jet City Rollergirls 55 (#8)
  Oly advances to play Rose City in the Day 2 semifinals; Jet City will play the winner of Angel City vs Bay Area.

• Rocky Mountain Rollergirls 278 (#2)
  Sacred City Derby Girls 45 (#7)
  Rocky Mountain advances to play Rat City in the Day 2 semifinals; Sacred City will play the winner of Tucson vs Denver.

• Rose City Rollers 139 (#4)
  B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls 120 (#5)
  Rose City advances to play Oly in the Day 2 semifinals; Bay Area will play Angel City in the first game of Day 2.

• Rat City Rollergirls 139 (#6)
  Denver Roller Dolls 128 (#3)
  Rat City advances to play Rocky Mountain in the Day 2 seminfinals; Denver will play Tucson.
