East Victoria Region VIC, Australia
East Vic Roller Derby started up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria in early 2010 Run by skaters for skaters, what once began as a private coaching session at a roller rink, soon grew into a fledgling league of passionate girls & boys in less than a year. By January 2011 the league had the courage and understanding of the derby culture to break away from the rink who received all monies for our sessions (which had grown to 5-35 each week), we moved training locations and became coached completely independently. In 2012, EVRD's travel team Witches of EastVic debuted at "The Great Southern Slam' tournament in Adelaide, Australia's bi annual largest roller derby tournament ever. Since then, the EVRD Witches have attended TGSS in 2014, 2016 & 2018, played in 3 Bendigo Rebellion Tournaments, and continue to compete in our local 'Statewide Stampede' featuring roller derby leagues from all over Victoria. As our bouting list of skater's have grown we now host also 2 home teams bouts per year to ensure all bouting skaters have opportunity to play. Although events like home teams games are focused mostly on our members and family & friends we also are passionate about the derby community and giving back to the greater community. In 2014 we hosted our first 'Black & Blue double header' which consists of 2 mash up bouts. 100% of profit from this event each year goes to Beyond Blue, a well-known Australian charity that promotes awareness for and raises money for the treatment of mental health issues. In 2015 we decided to dabble in junior derby and ran a 6 week boot camp to understand interest. With 50% of the juniors being from non derby families and kids attending from age 6-17 it was so successful we invited our neighboring league South Sea Roller Derby to join us in running an ongoing juniors program. We continue to gain members each term, have now hosted several bouts and sent our team, 'South East Magic Rollers' to the Junior's Nationals in 2017 & 2018. In 2017 East Vic Roller derby became a WFTDA Apprentice League, graduating to full membership in December 2018.
Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.
